Frances M. Doss is the wife of the late American Army Corporal Desmond Doss. The couple married in 1991 and remained together until Desmond died in 2006. She was born in January 1922 in Illinois, United States of America. Details of Frances Doss before her marriage to Desmond Doss are unknown. However, she was married to a man named Wesley Furman, with whom she had one child, a daughter named Marilyn Shadduck.
Career
Frances was an author and wrote several books; among the books she wrote is Desmond Doss: Conscientious Objector, which describes her husband’s life. For the 15 years she stayed by her husband’s side, Frances got to know her husband in and out, and it was easy for her when she was writing the book. Given that, Desmond was almost fully disabled and he had to be helped to do like everything. This just made things tougher but she remained by her side
Her Husband
Frances’ husband served as a combat medic in the infantry department during the Second World War. Regarding his early life, Desmond Doss was born in a Christian family that upheld the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Frances’ husband attended Adventist school and later found a job supporting his family.
He later joined the army and was expected to carry a gun but decided not to carry one, stating that his Christian beliefs were against killing. While in the army, he offered medical assistance to injured men. On a particular day in 1944, while at war, Desmond Doss saved the lives of more than 50 men. During the war in Okinawa, Frances’ husband was wounded several times and was awarded a Medal of Honor for his role during the war.
Life After War
Life after the war was not easy for Frances’ husband. He damaged his arm, so it was hard for him to focus on the other endeavors he had in mind. A year after World War II, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis; he underwent treatment for some time, and in the process, Desmond lost five ribs and a lung, and by 1951, he was 91% disabled.
Years later, Frances’ husband became one hundred percent disabled, and in the process, he lost his hearing capability. He received a cochlear surgery to mend his hearing, and despite suffering several injuries, he raised a family. Upon the death of his first wife Dorothy, Desmond married Frances, with whom he spent the rest of his life.
Some may say that Frances M. Doss was unique as she got married to a man who was disabled and had suffered several injuries. She supported Desmond for the rest of his life; she was there whenever he needed her and cared for him fully.
Frances Doss’s husband died in March 2006 after experiencing difficulty in breathing. He was 87 at the time of his death and was buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Death
Frances M. Doss died in 2009, three years after the death of her husband. She died of natural causes aged 87.
