Personal Life

Paul Cushing Child was born on January 15th 1902 in Montclair, New Jersey, United States of America.  He was born to Bertha Cushing, an American singer and barwoman and Charles Tripler Child. Paul has one twin brother, named Charles. Although he was born in Montclair he lived in Boston for most of his life.

Education and Career

Paul completed his schooling at Boston Latin School and went on to pursue an extension course at Columbia University. After he completed his education, Paul ventured into the teaching profession. He taught different subjects such as English, Photography, and French at schools in France, Italy and the United States of America.

During the Second World War, Paul served in the Office of Strategic Service. He was stationed in multiple countries and cities like Sri Lanka, Paris, Marseille, Bon and Oslo. He retired from working for the government in 1961 and pursued photography where he photographed for his wife’s cookbook.

Marital Life

Sometime during 1944-1945, when Paul and Julia Child were in service at the Office of Strategic Service in Kandy, Sri Lanka, the couple met and fell in love. They got married after a year on September 1, 1946, in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, United States of America. The couple moved to Washington DC, it was because of Paul’s palate and introduction to fine cuisine that Julia was introduced to cooking. After Paul was stationed in Paris, she joined Le Cordon Bleu and mastered the art of cooking there. The couple had no children.

Death

Paul, unfortunately, passed away on May 12, 1944, at the age of 92 at a nursing home in Lexington, Massachusetts, United States of America. From what is known off media, it is said that he was suffering from a long long-term illness that led up to his death.

Much later, his grand-nephew, Alex Prud’homme wrote and published a book titled ‘France Is a Feast: The Photographic Journey of Paul and Julia Child’ which is a book featuring 225 pictures taken by Paul.
